BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (9-7-0-0), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, won their third straight game on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory against the Springfield Thunderbirds (6-12-1-0) at Webster Bank Arena.

Ross Johnston and Devon Toews each scored for the Sound Tigers as the team matched its longest win streak of the season and snapped the Thunderbirds’ four-game winning stint. Between the pipes, Kristers Gudlevskis (4-3-0) nearly blanked Springfield, stopping all 31 shots he faced until allowing a power-play goal in the final four seconds.

After a scoreless opening period, the Sound Tigers were first to find the back of the net in the closing minutes of the middle frame. Johnston backhanded in his first goal of the season on a 2-on-1 breakaway, in which Travis St. Denis set up from the left wing. St. Denis passed the puck at the last possible second right in front of the net to connect with Johnston and break the scoreless tie at 17:44.

Bridgeport was able to pad its lead in the third period during a 5-on-3 power play. Toews found himself wide open between the circles and hammered in a slapshot that went top shelf on Springfield’s goaltender, Samuel Montembeault, for his fourth goal in three games. Tanner Fritz and Sebastian Aho assisted on the tally to give the Sound Tigers a 2-0 lead at the 17:34 mark. Fritz now leads Bridgeport with 13 helpers and 16 points this season.

Springfield broke up Gudlevskis’ shutout bid at 19:56 of the third period when Bobby Farnham elevated a wrist shot from the doorstep to make it 2-1 on the power play. Gudlevskis went down to make a couple of saves, but couldn’t get back to his feet quick enough to deny the sixth-year forward.

Bridgeport finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play, but it was the team’s penalty kill that shined for most of the game, going 4-for-5. The Thunderbirds outshot Bridgeport 32-27.
